Meet our colleague: Klaas De Schepper, Customs Expert at Customs Square

Both clients and colleagues will confirm it: Klaas De Schepper, Customs Expert at Customs Square, is a man from customs practice. Hands on, solution-oriented and operationally quickly deployable. Thanks to his extensive professional experience in customs, transport and logistics – supplemented with education and training – he expertly assists companies from various sectors in solving complex customs issues.

Starting a career as freight forwarder

Klaas started his customs career in 2012 as a freight forwarder in the export department of DHL. Three years later, he was working as a transport planner at CEVA Logistics, formerly known as TNT Logistics. Klaas: “In both companies, I had the opportunity to thoroughly expand my operational knowledge about customs and logistics. I learned how these companies develop logistics solutions, respond dynamically to changing market conditions and develop services tailored to clients.”

2016: switch to Geodis

“In May 2016, I made a professional switch to Geodis. After a start at the export department, Linda Fierens – who also worked in the company – asked me to join the customs department. At Geodis, I worked as supervisor of the customs control tower for a large FMCG company. Together with my colleagues, I handled all import/export customs declarations for their production units in Belgium. My tasks were very diverse, from answering billing questions to applying for new customs permits to advising on customs disputes and claims. This working experience took my practical knowledge to a higher level.”

Sharing knowledge with colleagues and clients

Today, that practical experience is worth its weight in gold. Klaas: “At the start of my career, I participated at a lot of customs-related and software training sessions. I like to share my knowledge and ideas with colleagues and clients. With a compact team within Customs Square, we are very well attuned to each other and we regularly exchange valuable ideas about current customs topics. Linda is like a walking encyclopedia about customs regulations. If I have an urgent question, she can quickly formulate the correct answer based on her ready knowledge.”

Off the mark at Customs Square

Klaas feels like a fish in water at Customs Square. “I get the chance to follow up exciting customs projects. Moreover, as colleagues, we are very complementary. I always can turn to the team for advice in case of complex questions. In return, I can develop my own strengths, such as creating model documents in customs or handy excel files. I also consider managing and coaching other people as one of my strengths. In the field of AEO permits, excise duties and transfer pricing, I would like to gain a deeper knowledge. But I am also looking forward to new assignments in sectors where I have not been active before. The coming years at Customs Square promise to be very challenging!”
