Customs Square is delighted to welcome customs expert Kurt Osaer as a new team member.
With more than 20 years of work experience in a customs environment (including the Federal Public Service Customs and Excise), Kurt mainly focuses on consulting clients about AEO-procedures and assisting them in the execution of customs and safety audits. His broad working experience allowed him to stay on top of the complex legislative rules in customs and excises, without losing touch with the business needs.
As an experienced customs manager with a proven track record in customs and excise, Kurt combines the ability of putting theory into practice. He has a broad experience in managing teams with a broad variety of profiles.

On 8 December 2020 the United States and Ecuador signed a protocol on trade rules and transparency. This deal updates their 1990 Trade and Investment Council Agreement by adding provisions on trade facilitation and customs administration, good regulatory practices, anti-corruption, and small and medium-sized enterprises.

In December 2020 the WCO released a research paper on waste control at borders from a Customs perspective.
The first section of the paper gives a general background on the current situation as regards the waste trade. It explains a.o. Customs’ role and contribution to waste control at borders, driven by the WCO Environment Programme.
The second section analyses the current situation by looking at the WCO Customs Enforcement Network (CEN) data as well as data reported to the Basel Convention.
The third section of this paper offers observations on the current situation and provides insights for Customs.

As from 1 December 2020 the German government has changed the due date of import VAT, providing substantial cash flow relief to importers. More specifically import VAT will be due after the importer has received its VAT back through a VAT reduction.
The Second Corona Tax Aid Act allows for the due date for VAT import payment to be moved to the 26th of the second month following the import.

HS Codes for HFCs – how to bridge the gap until HS 2022
The WCO participated in the virtual side event, organised by UNEP OzonAction, at the 32nd Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.
This event aimed to inform participants about how the WCO Recommendation can help implement national measures to identify hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) before the new international Harmonized System codes come into force.
