UK customs declaration service: CHIEF replaced by CDS

The UK customs authority HMRC is closing its Customs Handling of Import and Export Freight (CHIEF) system on March 31, 2023.

From 1 October 2022, all declarations for import movements will have to be made through the new Customs Declaration Service (CDS). All businesses managing UK customs declarations will need to declare goods using the Customs Declaration Service.

This system replacement will be managed in two phases:

As of September 30, 2022, making import declarations using CHIEF will no longer be possible

As of March 31, 2023, you will no longer be able to make export declarations using CHIEF and the National Export System (NES).
